Randy L. Hendricks was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1959. Having lived in the country since he was the age of four years helped him to develop a love and appreciation for the natural world. “I feel that growing up in the country, helped begin to nurture my love for the natural world and its wildlife. The hours I spent playing in the woods and exploring gave me a basic understanding and an early appreciation for one of God’s greatest works, ‘The Natural World.’
Randy earned his “Eagle Award” (the highest rank achievable in the Boy Scouts of America) after serving six years. Those years in Scouting sharpened his knowledge of the outdoors and nature. He began drawing as a very young child and during his school years he excelled in all of his art and drawing classes. School seemed to consider art a hobby and certainly not a serious way to make a living. However, his drawing abilities soon landed him a position as a draftsman. It was during these early years that he met and married his wife, Karen.
During this time Randy continued to draw as a pastime, however in 1982 his wife, Karen, suggested that he paint some of the drawings he had been working on. Though that first painting was hardly a masterpiece, Randy found himself quite intrigued by the possibilities. It was at that time that he began to study seriously. Gathering books from libraries and using a sheet music stand for an easel; he studied color, technique and composition. He soon discovered that he had a natural talent, understanding instinctively how the elements of a good painting worked together to make an impact.
Many years passed and during this time his originals always sold. In 1993, he painted an inspirational work, which received such a strong reaction from the public, that he decided to publish it. It was his first limited edition print, and it sold out in just three months. It was then that Randy realized that making a living at his art was a definite possibility and so set in motion his pursuit for full-time art. Three years later after several successes with other prints, Randy stepped out “in faith” and began his career as a full-time artist.
Randy continues his work, full-time, in Howard City, Michigan, where he lives with his wife and their five children in a historical one-room schoolhouse. His studio is located in a building behind their home.
