Being raised on a farm in Raleigh, North Carolina, created a lifelong love of animals and the great outdoors for artist Lee Mims. This love was intensified after she received her Masters Degree in Geology from UNC at Chapel Hill and spent many hours observing the natural world while working as a field Geologist for a large mining concern. Although she had no formal training in art, she was constantly drawing and painting, even as a child. Her painting career began in earnest after she married and moved to a horse farm where she trained horses and often painted their portraits. Soon, she moved into painting portraits of people and did that almost exclusively for about 12 years. Feeling the need to express her creativity without the constraints of portraiture, she expanded into animal art and landscapes. While she concentrates mainly on studio work, she considers her plein air work both rewarding and relaxing. An award winning artist, she recently exhibited her work at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, the North Carolina Estuarium and Arts for the Parks in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
